About Me

Thank you for stopping by to check out my A Cultured Family blog! My name is Shelley and I’m grateful that you’ve chosen to spend a bit of your day visiting my site. It is my hope that this blog will be a source of inspiration for families who want to learn more about the world in which we live through cultural travel (domestic and international), cultural food, the arts, and other topics related to culture. But, before you look around the site any further, I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself and my family, which is pictured in the below photo.

First, I’ve been married for more than 20 years to someone who prays with me, makes me laugh, is my cheerleader in my professional and personal endeavors, and who supports my obsession with chocolate, Mexican food and denim. He’s the guy in the below photo who, by the way, ALWAYS wins board games on family game night!

Speaking of my professional endeavors, my background is in agency public relations (previous clients include Mary Kay Cosmetics, Luster Products and Evenflo Company); journalism (including bylines in Chicago Parent’s Going PlacesFamily Time Magazine, HomeLife MagazinePublishers WeeklyShine Brightly, Sun Publications, Urban Faith.com and other media); and content creation (e.g., specialty bibles for children). The above covers represent a sampling of the publications in which I’ve been published.

I’m a mom to two kind-hearted and comical Gen Z’ers who entertain me with their harmonies, dance moves, and their ability to recite lines from musicals, as well as our favorite comedy-dramas. My daughters do their best to teach me popular texting lingo and colloquialisms and I do my best to not embarrass them when I use them.

I like to visit cultural institutions, eat delicious cultural foods, and support the arts because they each have a special way of bringing beauty, fulfillment and, ultimately, culture into our lives. And, I’m excited to have the opportunity to help other families identify sources of cultural enrichment. I’ll also share from time to time parenting advice and money-saving tips I’ve learned since becoming a wife and mom. (FYI, all photos in my posts were taken with my camera unless otherwise noted.)

Thanks again for visiting and I hope you’ll stop by again soon!

Shelley

P.S. Feel free to let me know if you’d like for me to cover a particular travel-, food- or arts-related topic in the future. You may email me at aculturedfamily@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you!
